| ATTN: My friends, and anyone interested in progress. |
[Aug. 1st, 2008|01:06 am] |
As many of you may know, this summer i've pretty much given my life to an organization and an event.
The organization is called "Substance". It's a small non-profit (though I think negative-profit would be a more accurate way to describe it) i started with a couple of artists/activists this past fall whose mission is to "merge arts, music and activism".
The event is Ripple Effect -
A day-long festival promoting peaceful, progressive, constructive action through art and music. It is basically a concert that will be held on the Capitol Lawn just outside the RNC this fall. Through the bands we have performing - Michael Franti, Dead Prez, Anti-flag, Matisyahu, and many more - as well as the progressive organizations tabling, doing training, and running workshops - we hope to create a safe space for people to come down and get involved in causes that they care about.
I can't stress enough how important this is to me. The three of us putting this on have all quit our jobs and gotten into a substantial amount of personal debt in order to pull this off (right now we're looking at somewhere between 20-30,000 dollars each).
We have all of the logistics for the event solidified, but we're definitely still short on cash to pay for it. We're risking everything because this is something we believe in, so I'm asking you for your support. Look over the event on the website - www.rippleeffect08.com - and if this is something you believe in too, please support us in any way that you can.
If you're an individual - donate a small amount, reach out to friends and family and get them to donate a small amount. If you'd like to do something other than opening your wallet, e-mail me and volunteer for the fundraising campaign or the day-of operations of the event. Any support in any capacity would be amazing.
If you're one of the hundreds of bands I've befriended over the years - throw a benefit show! Let people know what's going on and how they can support it. Let us know and we can help promote your band on our website too.
I realize asking for this kind of support through a bulletin or blog post is kind of ridiculous - and if there were more than 24 hours in a day I would take the time to call and write each and every one of you, but the fact of the matter is that we're all doing the most we can with the energy we have.
Again, if you'd like to donate or learn some more about the event -
check out the website at www.rippleeffect08.com or call me at 763.913.2192 - I'd be happy to talk with anyone about what we're doing.
After reading this you may think I'm insane or irresponsible or all of the above, but anyone that knows me knows that I'm a passionate person who is only looking to do the right thing - and now i've found the right thing to do.

Specifically yesterday. I'm gonna be vague about this, which is lame, but yesterday was one of the best days i've had in a really, really long time. Now, this is not to say that i have had that many bad days recently, but yesterday was just so great that it managed to outshine even the best ones i've had as of late.

| | Devastated | ] | As some of you may or may not know, we lost an outstanding human being on wednesday morning. Shamus was my best friend throughout the majority of high school. If it weren't for him, I'm not sure I would have started playing music, much less made it through my teenage years. We haven't spoken in a year, and haven't been close in longer, but his impact on my life is something that hasn't been matched by any friend I've ever had. Shamus was one of those kids who was amazing at pretty much everything. I honestly can't name one thing he was bad at. 29 on his ACT. Could shred on pretty much any instrument you put in front of him. Could play basketball like nobody's business. He was a great intellectual, athlete, and musician, but he was an even better friend. He was always the kid that let everyone stay over. He was always the one that drove everyone home. If something bad ever happened, he was the first one to call. If you didn't have enough money to get into a show, shamus would be the first one to give it to you. There's no way to express how I'm feeling about this right now.
Shamus, you'll be missed. dearly. I Love You.
for anyone interested: as of right now, Shamus' funeral arrangements are as follows:
Saturday, October 28th @ St.Joan of Arc Church 9-11am Visitation 11am Funeral
St.Joan of Arc is located east of the 46th St exit off 35W, in Minneapolis. I believe the address is 4537 3rd Ave. However, BE SURE to check the star tribune newspaper, tomorrow (friday, oct 27th) for more details.
I'm sorry if you found out through this message, but if anyone needs to talk to somebody about this, feel free to give me a call: 763-913-2192
In loving memory of Shamus Timothy Helgason (1986-2006)
P.S. I really appreciate the outpour of support. By no means am I taking this well, but I think the people who really need our support right now are his parents: Anne and Lowell, and those who were more recently close to him: Jade and Missy. My sincere condolences to all of you. Jade, if you're reading this, call me sometime soon man. |

| | Aneuretical | ] | So today i took it upon myself to do a good deed and return a lost cellular phone that was found at starbucks and given to me. I recruited my newfound friend Johnny as my wingman for this mission. We arrived at the apartment complex behind burger king deep in the heart of bloomington at approximately 2:30 pm. We then ventured up to apartment 15A on the 2nd floor of the complex, where we greated by a fairly overweight middle-aged woman who was overjoyed to have her phone back. In between her exclamation of gratitude and love for me, she proceeded to call her cat a "bitch" because she had escaped. As if swearing at this sweet little feline wasn't enough, she went on to tell us that the cat's ethnic background followed her(it was an all white cat with a black tail). She also repeatedly made mention of her cat's apparent affection for said "ethnics". I have never laughed so hard at another human in all my life. Yet another example of why I hate white people. She was extremely nice to me, but what if I had been black? And did she honestly assume that since we were white, we then surely must also share her distaste for "ethnics".
good. lord.
ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE: I have officially fulfilled my duty as a cog in the machine that is the golden rule, and in return...
I HAVE A NEW PHONE! not only does this phone actually get service, enabling me to send and receive calls, it also has text messaging and a camera! This is quite a stark contrast to my previous phone, which did not have a working screen, much less text messaging or a camera!
I'm a happy camper, and my birthday is on saturday. score. |

as falls wichita, so falls wichita falls
tonight i saw The Ice Harvest with Nikki. I liked it a lot, but it really wasn't very good. I think i was just in the mood for a mediocre black comedy with whodunnit-esque twists. Not to mention my boy John Cusack. I'm pretty sure he could be in the next xXx movie and I'd only marvel at the dimension he brought to the character. But that's a good thing right? what with the glass half full and all.
yeah. and now I'm unexplicably in the mood to listen to the poppiest music possible. Although I think I'll just settle for Cake. Speaking of which, they had some pretty good chocolate cake at dinner. That's relevant, right?
finals. bring it on....right guys?
P.S. why is everything I could possibly want to go to all occuring at the same time on saturday night? way to go guys. |

i guess when someone gets so used to lying they can't handle seeing the truth about them, their relationship(Former relationship, that is) and how they treat other people. and suzy - for the record, i don't ever want to talk to you again, i just had to get that shit off my chest, and i figured this was the best place to do it. and i still think that, it's just too bad that you're too insecure with yourself and your actions to have to go into my account and take it down. The fact of the matter is i don't need to tell the world what you did, they can figure it out on their own. You're doing a really good job at helping them out with that. To my real friends: Thank all of you for your support. Even people I hardly know. I appreciate the real love you all are showing me at a time when i really need it. I hope you can count on me for the same. |

i just hope you know that i still love you and i still care about you. even if i'm not in your life right now, i still think about you all the time and i still wish that i could be the one to help you through this instead of being the one causing it. Not that it would work out that well anyway, since i can barely get myself through it. I'm sorry suzy. |

| | devious | ] | SO...
since my dear banolan NEVER EVER EVER updates, i decided that i will for him.
"hi, i'm nolan and i'm a very busy man. i am currently on tour with version 4.0 of niahiamiah with my girlfriend's brother who snores really loud. tour is going well, and i miss my little snoozer like no one's business! i think she is possibly the coolest, hottest, and best-dressed girlfriend that anyone could ever have!
as far as life goes, i now have 2 jobs, one at starbucks and one with construction. i finally said, "FUCK YOU, HOT TOPIC!" quite near to my departure, and they said, "but we liked only paying you minimum wage!" and i totally responded with, "NO WAY, JERK-FACES. YOU'RE ALL STUPID AND LOOK WIERD, TOO!" i really stuck it to the man.
welp, as fun as it was updating, i have a show to play and autographs to sign, but don't forget to keep on rockin, fellow LJers! i promise i'll try and update more, because i know that you all are thirsty for my hot journal-loving. peace out, home slice hot dogs!"
and since his birthday WAS a mere 4 days ago, i feel that everyone should do him the favor of wishing him a hap-hap-happy 19th birthday!
so, without further writing, HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY LOVELY DEAREST BANOLAN!!!!!!! I LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU AND HOPE YOU MAGICALLY COME BACK FROM TOUR TONIGHT IN MY SLEEP! ENJOY YOUR 5 MONTHS IN THE SUN BEFORE I'M 20!
